Information Technology Degree Requirements

To qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for general programming positions to include the individual occupational requirements (IOR) for the GS-2210, Information Technology (IT) Management Series.

Information Technology Degree Requirements

Specialized Experience: Individuals must have IT-related experience that demonstrates each of the four competencies listed below: attention to detail, customer service, oral communication, and problem solving.

One year of specialized experience including security principles, concepts, methods, breakthroughs, policies, design, development, testing and applications of both hardware and software; systems procurement processes; systems architecture, integration techniques and testing methods; cost analysis; review security related contracts.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed in the next grade/lower level position in federal service (GS-09).

INDUCATION: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate OR 3 full years of graduate education of progressively higher level leading to such a doctorate or equivalent doctorate in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems administration, mathematics, operations research, statistics or technology administration or a bachelor’s degree that provides a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the Development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

NOTE: You must send a copy of the official transcripts. FEDERAL TIME IN GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL PROGRAM POSITIONS (GS): Applicants for promotion of merit must meet applicable ongoing time requirements to be considered eligible.

Information Technology Degree Requirements

One year is required at GS-09 level to meet the grade level time requirements for GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or if you are in a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

Knowledge, SKILLS, AND SKILLS (KSA): Your grades will be assessed based on your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of a wide range of IT security principles, concepts, and practices.

 

Knowledge of a wide range of IT security principles, concepts, and practices, products and services (including systems software, database software, ready access storage technology) and methods for assessing risk and vulnerability, implementing mitigation enhancements, and disseminating IT security tools and procedures.

Knowledge of INFOSEC IT security requirements for certification and accreditation, network operations and protocols, system testing and evaluation, and performance management methods sufficient to plan and conduct security accreditation reviews for installed systems or networks and to evaluate and advise on new or revised security measures and countermeasures Based on the results of accreditation reviews.

Knowledge of local area network security requirements and techniques to protect computer systems against viruses, data manipulation and unauthorized system entry.

Knowledge of a wide range of telecommunication concepts and principles, modes of operation, systems, media, equipment, the configuration of equipment and related systems, processes and software procedures for assessing and advising on vulnerability to attacks from various sources (e.g. spying, disruption). services, destructive programs/applications) and procedures and methods for the protection of systems and applications.

Ability to communicate efficiently,  both orally and in writing. Ability to develop and conduct information security training.

PARTIAL TIME OR EXPERIENCE WITHOUT PAYMENT: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid or part-time work.

Must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTARY WORK EXPERIENCE: refers to paid and unpaid work experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; and social).

Volunteer work helps develop critical skills, knowledge, and abilities that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly into gainful employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experiences, also including volunteer experience.
