Former NFL recipient Donald Reche Caldwell died this weekend at the age of 41, according to the New England Patriots, one of his former teams.

The Patriots expressed their condolences on Sunday, but did not give any details on the cause of death. Caldwell’s mother, Deborah Caldwell, told the NBC daughter WFLA that he died Saturday during an “ambush” in Tampa, Florida.
Tampa police would not confirm NBC News Caldwell’s death, but they did confirm that they were investigating a murder in which a victim was shot dead on Saturday night. Although the investigation is still ongoing, the shooting was “not a random act,” police said.

Deborah Caldwell did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Reche Caldwell was designed by the San Diego Chargers in 2002 after playing at the University of Florida. He signed with the New England Patriots in 2006 and reached the AFC Championship that season with former star quarterback Tom Brady. Caldwell dropped two passes in the championship game and the Patriots lost to the Indianapolis Colts.
Former Patriots teammate Benjamin Watson tweeted on Sunday that he was sad to hear of Caldwell’s death.

“Always made us laugh and was carefree. Always had the biggest smile. Always had the biggest stories,” Watson tweeted.
