Folding Samsung Phone and Huawei Mate X

2019 is the year of folding smartphones, there’s no doubt about it. Although everything focuses on the proposals of folding Samsung phone and Huawei, Galaxy Fold and Mate X are not the only devices in the category. Therefore, we have compiled a list of all the foldable smartphones we expect to see during the year.

First of all, the Galaxy Folding, Samsung’s first folding device that kicked off the Unpacked event on February 20 by literally jumping from the chair to everyone present.

This device has two completely separate screens, a 4.6-inch exterior with a 21:9 aspect ratio and a 7.3-inch folding interior that opens like a book. The Galaxy Fold has a completely different design to the previous one (Royole FlexPai) and the subsequent proposal (Huawei Mate X), as Samsung’s folding device is protected by the metal body when closed.

Under the hood is an Exynos 9820 processor, just like the Galaxy S10, 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal memory, while the power supply will be managed by a 4,380 mAh battery divided into two sections due to its folding design.

From a software point of view, Samsung has worked closely with Google to create a new experience, especially from a multitasking point of view. You can run and use three applications at the same time.
The Galaxy Fold will be available in May, but advance orders will open at the end of April. The selling price is about 2,000 euros.

Presented at this year’s Mobile World Congress, Huawei’s Mate X is the second choice on our list. The first thing that catches the eye of this device is the fact that it has a single screen and therefore bends in the opposite direction to that of the folding Galaxy.
When fully open, the Mate X offers a large 8-inch screen, while when folded it looks like a 6.6-inch diagonal smartphone. Huawei installed all the buttons, ports and cameras in a side section from which you can pick up your smartphone and which ensures a much firmer grip.

Although at first glance the Mate X has proven to be better than the Galaxy Fold in several respects (especially because of its compatibility with the 5G network), it is still too early to be completely sure and we will have to wait to test both devices at their best.

We know this device very well. Announced late last year, it is in fact the first folding smartphone that has seen the light and is already on sale (only in China at the moment). The company also took advantage of two important fairs to show its device to the press, first at the CES in Las Vegas (where we were able to test it with our own hands) and, later, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The design of the FlexPai probably inspired Huawei to build his Mate X: the two devices are not so different in many ways, although it is undeniable how Huawei has achieved an indisputably more advanced version. Fully extended, Royole’s foldable smartphone features a 7.8-inch screen that opens outwards.
Despite the loopholes we’ve been able to prove at the software level and in terms of construction quality, reliability and robustness, we must remember that the FlexPai is also the “cheapest” folding smartphone on the market, launched in China at a price of about 1,300 euros.

Although the Chinese manufacturer has not officially presented its foldable smartphone, even during its press conference at MWC 2019, OPPO already has its own working prototype.

The folding smartphone of the Chinese company has the particularity of being very similar to the Mate X of Huawei, not to say almost identical, and it was possible to notice these details thanks to some images shared on the network. As for the hardware components, unfortunately we do not have any information.

We’ll still have to wait a while before seeing it in action and finding out more details. However, the war on folding smartphones has only just begun and, in one way or another, OPPO has shown that it doesn’t want to be left behind.

One of the latest and most innovative foldable smartphones to be admired is that of Chinese giant Xiaomi. The first prototype, shown by the company’s president in a video posted on their official social networks, revealed that Xiaomi’s foldable smartphone is capable of folding on two sides.
Instead of closing in half like the Mate X, the Mi Flex (unconfirmed name) can be folded externally on the left and right sides, turning the device into a much more compact smartphone with a square look, particularly unusual but innovative. Recently, Xiaomi decided to leave a statement on this device and did not hesitate to announce the arrival of its “foldable double smartphone”.
This brand probably won’t tell you anything, but you should know that it is the company that manages the famous Alcatel and BlackBerry brands. During the press conference that took place at mWC, the company showed its proposals. We speak in plural because the brand has not only shown a single foldable smartphone, but different types that can be adapted to different types of customers.
Some showed a screen that could be folded in half, while others could only fold a certain section of the screen. However, some of them are just prototypes and may never see the light. Moreover, as they were only prototypes, they were only exhibited inside a showcase, so it was not possible to get close to them or touch them.

What do you think of folding smartphones? Are you ready for the invasion?
